The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords not to require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes just after NSFAS gained reports about some accommodation companies who demand NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment so as to get use of the permitted private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation suppliers of the obligatory conditions, as supplied by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Settlement among the personal accommodation providers and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS said in a press release on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states the rent will probably be paid month-to-month for the accommodation company (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf of your lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS conditions and terms for personal accommodation providers’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not demand or allow the lessee to pay a deposit, top-up payments, or another kinds of payment on the lessor, or some other person in reference to this arrangement, which include payment of hire, even though awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall have no recourse versus the lessee for any default during the nsfas allowances payment of rent by NSFAS," the agreement reads.

The NSFAS conditions and terms for private accommodation vendors’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded as a result of an incorrect choice by NSFAS, click here the coed won't be answerable for payment of any arrear rent to the accommodation company, up till the date of being defunded."

NSFAS defined that where the NSFAS-funded student chooses to continue occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding staying defunded by NSFAS, the scholar are going to be accountable for payment of lease into the lessor within the date of remaining check here defunded.
